Watering & Irrigation

Hoses that do not kink in a cold spring, sprinklers and drip kits that keep beds alive through a July watering ban, timers, rain barrels and diverters, nozzles, wands, hose reels and watering cans. Many Canadian cities restrict outdoor watering to set days and hours in summer, which makes timers, drip lines and rain barrels less a luxury than the way you keep a garden alive legally.

What to look for: a hose rated for your climate (rubber or hybrid for cold, drain and store it before freeze-up); a timer with a rain delay; drip kits with pressure regulation and enough emitters for the bed length; and a rain barrel with a screened lid, an overflow and a spigot high enough to fit a watering can under. Check your city’s watering schedule before setting timers.
