Tools and barriers for the pests and weeds that come with a Canadian yard: pump and backpack sprayers, stand-up weeders and torches, landscape fabric and edging, deer and rabbit fencing, netting, mosquito traps and dunks, wasp traps, motion sprinklers and repellents. Because most provinces and cities ban cosmetic pesticides, this department leans on physical and cultural control rather than chemicals.

What to look for: products registered with Health Canada’s PMRA (a PCP number on the label) for anything you spray or spread, and only where your municipality allows it; landscape fabric that lets water through; fencing at least 2.4 m for deer; and a sprayer with a chemical-resistant seal if you use horticultural oil or vinegar-based herbicides. When in doubt, pull the weed and fix the lawn density.
