Urban Worm Coco Coir Soil Amendment Brick 1.4 lb — pH‑Neutral, Low‑Salt Bedding & Potting Mix Additive

This product converts lightweight compressed coco fiber into a workable soil amendment and bedding that holds moisture, improves soil texture, and replaces peat with a sustainable alternative. Each brick soaks up about one gallon of water, yielding clean, fluffed coir that mixes easily into potting soil or serves as a carbon-rich bedding for worms, turtles, reptiles, and dry sanitation systems.

How do I prepare and rehydrate a 1.4 lb coco coir brick?

Rehydrating these compressed bricks is fast and straightforward: place the brick in a container, add roughly one gallon (or enough to fully submerge), and allow it to absorb water and break apart. Light stirring speeds the process, and within minutes you'll have loose, workable coir ready to use.

• Add about one gallon of water per 1.4 lb brick for full expansion.
• Loosen the swollen block with a fork or gloved hands for an even texture.
• Drain any excess water; the result should be moist but not soggy for bedding.

What makes this coco coir suitable for worms, reptiles, and composting toilets?

Urban Worm coco coir is repeatedly washed to reduce salts and electrical conductivity, producing a low EC product that is gentle on earthworms and sensitive animals. Its neutral pH and excellent water retention create a stable, aerated bedding that supports biological activity without introducing excess salts.

• Rinsed for low salt content; each block measures under 1.5 mS/cm.
• pH-neutral medium so it won’t dramatically shift enclosure or compost pH.
• High fiber and porous structure for good aeration and moisture balance.

How does this coco coir improve potting mixes and soil texture?

When blended into potting soil, coco coir adds structure and holds moisture evenly while allowing excess water to drain, reducing compaction compared with heavy soils. It’s an eco-friendly substitute for peat moss that creates a light, friable texture ideal for seed starting, container plants, and repotting.

• Increases water retention without creating waterlogged conditions when mixed properly.
• Contributes organic, carbon-rich material that enhances soil porosity and root access.
• Sustainable alternative to peat—supports long-term growing practices.

How much coir do I need and how is it stored?

A single 1.4 lb brick expands into multiple quarts of loose coir—enough to amend several small pots or refresh bedding in a worm bin. Store unopened bricks in a dry, cool place; once hydrated, use within a few weeks or keep damp and aerated to prevent mold.

• One brick absorbs about one gallon of water and yields several quarts of usable coir.
• Keep sealed bricks dry until use to preserve expansion quality.
• Hydrated coir should be kept moist and turned periodically if stored short-term.

Who is this for? Urban Worm Coco Coir is designed for home gardeners, container growers, vermicomposters, reptile and small-animal keepers, and anyone seeking a sustainable peat alternative for soil mixes or sanitation systems. If you need a low-salt, pH-neutral, water-retentive medium that’s easy to store and simple to prepare, this product fits a wide range of horticultural and bedding needs without synthetic additives.
