Kaytee Cardinal Blend Bird Seed — 7 lb Bag, Black Oil Sunflower & Safflower for Cardinals and Songbirds

Kaytee Cardinal Blend is a 7 lb premium seed mix formulated with black oil sunflower and safflower to entice cardinals and other songbirds to your yard.

If you want a simple, proven way to invite bright red cardinals and a variety of other backyard birds, this carefully balanced mix focuses on the ingredients those species prefer. The 7-pound bag gives you multiple refills for tube or platform feeders and is suited to year-round use. Ingredients are chosen to appeal to cardinals’ strong beaks while offering some resistance to opportunistic squirrels.

What makes this mix appealing to cardinals and similar birds?

Cardinals favor large, oil-rich seeds that provide high energy and are easy for their stout bills to crack. This blend combines black oil sunflower for fat and flavor with safflower for a milder alternative cardinals enjoy. Other small songbirds like chickadees, nuthatches, and grosbeaks also find the mix attractive, increasing backyard activity.

• High proportion of black oil sunflower for energy-dense feeding
• Safflower seeds that cardinals accept and many squirrels dislike
• Formulation supports a mix of species for diverse viewing

How should I feed Kaytee Cardinal Blend to get the best results?

Use tube feeders with larger perches or platform feeders where cardinals can sit comfortably. Keep feeders topped off and placed near shrubs or trees for quick cover—this encourages regular visits. Rotate feeder locations if squirrels become persistent; safflower helps but doesn't eliminate pest interest entirely.

• Best in tube or platform feeders that accommodate larger birds
• Place within 10–20 feet of cover like bushes or low branches
• Refill frequently and clean feeders to maintain freshness

Does this blend help reduce squirrel raiding?

Safflower is included because many squirrels find its taste less appealing, which can lower unwanted visits compared with all-sunflower mixes. While safflower discourages some squirrels, persistent or habituated squirrels may still attempt to access feeders. Combining safflower with feeder baffles and strategic placement is the most reliable approach to deter them.

• Safflower's bitter flavor is less attractive to many squirrels
• Not a total squirrel-proof solution—use baffles for best results
• Works well alongside placement and feeder design tactics

How much seed will a 7 lb bag cover, and how long will it last?

Duration depends on visitor volume and feeder size: for one feeder with moderate daily traffic, a 7 lb bag can last several weeks to a few months. Heavy bird activity will use seed faster, while seasonal changes affect consumption rates. Monitor usage and adjust ordering or storage to keep seed fresh and dry.

• Moderate feeding: several weeks per 7 lb bag
• Heavy feeding or multiple feeders: may last only days to weeks
• Store unopened bags in a cool, dry place to preserve freshness

Who is this for: Kaytee Cardinal Blend suits backyard birdwatchers who want to attract cardinals and a mix of other songbirds with minimal fuss. It’s ideal for homeowners using tube or platform feeders who prefer a seed formula that balances high-energy sunflower with safflower’s squirrel-deterring properties. If you enjoy regular bird visits and clear, close-up viewing from a window or patio, this 7 lb bag gives you a convenient, ready-to-use option to enhance your yard’s wildlife activity.
