Scotts Zoysia Grass Seed & Mulch 5 lb — Full Sun/Light Shade, Heat- and Drought-Tolerant Lawn Cover (up to 2,000 sq ft)

This product pairs zoysia grass seed with a built-in mulch layer to protect seed, retain moisture and reduce erosion during germination. Designed for full sun and light shade, the mix is engineered to withstand hot, dry periods while remaining adaptable to cooler weather. The blend is 99.9% weed free and is intended for homeowners and landscapers who want a durable, carpet-like turf that requires less frequent mowing and watering once established.

How long does it take for Scotts Zoysia seed to germinate and establish?

Germination and establishment depend on soil temperature, moisture and care. Zoysia typically germinates slower than cool-season grasses; you can expect visible sprouting within 14–21 days under optimal conditions. Continued care for the first several weeks is essential to develop strong roots and a dense lawn.

• Water lightly twice daily for at least three weeks to keep seedbed consistently moist.
• Warm soil (above 65°F) speeds germination; cooler soils delay growth.
• Avoid heavy foot traffic until seedlings are well rooted.

Will this seed mix handle heat, drought and partial shade?

The zoysia variety in this Scotts mix is selected for medium to high drought resistance and tolerance to heat. It performs well in full sun and tolerates light shade, making it suitable for sunny yards with a few shaded spots. While drought-hardy, supplemental irrigation during prolonged dry spells helps maintain color and density.

• Designed for full sun and light shade environments.
• Medium to high drought tolerance reduces frequent watering after establishment.
• Heat-adapted genetics help maintain turf quality in warm climates.

How much area will a 5 lb bag cover and what preparation is needed?

A single 5 lb bag is formulated to seed up to 2,000 sq. ft., depending on application rate and soil conditions. Proper site preparation—removing debris, loosening the topsoil and amending if needed—improves seed-to-soil contact and boosts germination. Applying the seed evenly and keeping the surface consistently moist are key to uniform coverage.

• Covers up to 2,000 sq. ft. when applied at recommended rates.
• Loosen soil and remove weeds or rocks before seeding for best results.
• Use a spreader for even distribution and rake lightly to ensure contact.

What maintenance does a new zoysia lawn need until fully established?

New zoysia seedlings require consistent moisture, careful mowing timing and minimal traffic. Water lightly twice daily for at least three weeks, reduce frequency as roots develop, and wait to mow until grass reaches a height of about 1.5–2 inches. After establishment, zoysia typically needs less frequent mowing and watering than many cool-season grasses.

• Water lightly twice daily for three weeks, then taper to deeper, less frequent watering.
• Mow when seedlings reach 1.5–2 inches, cutting no more than one-third of blade height.
• Limit foot traffic until turf is dense and mature to avoid thin patches.
