Rahato Horticultural Lava Rocks 6 lb Bag — 3/8" Porous Gravel for Succulents, Cacti Drainage & Top Dressing

Rahato 6lbs horticultural lava rocks are a porous, naturally formed 3/8" gravel mix designed to improve drainage, aeration, and pH balance for succulents, cacti, orchids, and creative plant displays.

These mid-sized lava stones combine the rugged texture of volcanic rock with a lightweight, mineral-rich structure that helps create an ideal substrate or top-dressing layer for drought-tolerant and acid-preferring plants. Supplied in a convenient 6-pound bag, the blend brings visual contrast and functional benefits to pots, terrariums, bonsai trays, and outdoor beds without adding harmful chemicals.

How will these lava rocks change my potted-succulent routine?

Replacing or mixing potting media with Rahato lava rocks reduces water retention at the root zone and increases air circulation around roots. That makes watering cycles more forgiving for succulents and cacti while reducing the risk of soggy soil.

• Promotes quicker drainage than plain potting soil
• Adds permanent soil structure that won’t decompose
• Helps prevent compacted root zones
• Works as both mix-in and decorative top layer

Can I use these rocks for orchids, bonsai, or terrarium projects?

Yes—their slightly acidic, mineral surface and steady porosity make them suitable for a range of plant setups. Use them as a drainage layer, part of a custom substrate, or a finished surface to enhance moisture control and aesthetic appeal.

• Drainage layer beneath orchid bark or moss
• Stable base for bonsai soil mixes
• Decorative and functional groundcover for terrariums
• Safe, inert material that won’t leach toxins

What size and texture should I expect from the 3/8" blend?

Particles average roughly 3/8 inch with natural variation in shape and edge sharpness, giving a coarse, textured look that’s effective at channeling water and trapping air. The mix presents a garden-ready visual while remaining lightweight for easy pot handling.

• Average particle ~3/8" with irregular natural shapes
• Porous surface for water retention control and aeration
• Lightweight compared with solid stones, easing repotting
• Consistent size for predictable drainage performance

How should I apply Rahato lava rocks around my plants?

Application is flexible: blend into soil for long-term structure, place beneath potting mix to improve drainage, or use as a dry topcoat to reduce evaporation and deter pests. Adjust depth and coverage depending on plant type and container size.

• Mix 10–30% into potting soil for succulents and cacti
• Layer 1–2" at pot bottoms for improved drainage
• Spread a 0.5–1" decorative top layer to reduce evaporation
• Use in terrariums and fairy gardens for visual contrast
