Pennington Smart Seed Northeast Mix Grass Seed 7 lb — Fast Germination, Drought-Tolerant

Pennington Smart Seed Northeast Mix is a premium 7 lb grass-seed blend formulated to establish durable, water-conserving lawns across Northeastern climates.

Designed for yards that face cold winters, humid summers and variable rainfall, this Smart Seed blend combines Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass and Kentucky Bluegrass to offer faster germination, disease resistance and improved drought performance. The seed comes coated with a balanced starter fertilizer and Pennington’s NexGen-bred varieties to help new turf establish quickly and use less water once mature.

How quickly will I see green after sowing Pennington Smart Seed?

Expect visible germination within about 8 to 14 days under favorable soil temperature and moisture conditions. Perennial ryegrass in the mix sprouts fastest, while tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass fill in to create a durable stand.

• Germination window: typically 8–14 days
• Starter fertilizer in coat speeds early growth
• Best results when soil stays consistently moist until established

Where and when should I plant this Northeast mix?

Plant in early spring or early fall for best establishment in the Northeast, especially in areas that receive roughly 4–6 hours of sun daily. It works for repairing bare spots, overseeding thin lawns, or starting new turf from scratch when soil prep and watering are followed.

• Ideal seasons: early spring or early fall
• Sun exposure: about 4–6 hours daily recommended
• Use for overseeding or new lawn establishment

How much area does a 7 lb bag cover and how should I apply it?

This 7 lb bag covers up to 6,660 sq ft when overseeding an existing lawn and about 2,220 sq ft for establishing a new lawn. Apply using a broadcast spreader for even coverage, lightly rake seed into contact with soil, and keep the surface consistently moist until seedlings are established.
