HAVAHART motion-activated sprinkler Critter Ridder — PIR infrared sensor, water-saving burst deterrent

The HAVAHART Critter Ridder is a motion-activated sprinkler that uses infrared sensing and short water bursts to humanely deter wildlife and protect gardens without chemicals. The Critter Ridder blends a sensitive PIR detector with adjustable spray patterns to protect lawns, flower beds, and vegetable gardens from small to mid-size animals. It runs on two AA batteries (not included) and conserves water by delivering only 2–3 cups per activation. Built for easy placement on a metal spike and with user-adjustable controls, this unit balances effective animal deterrence with eco-friendly operation and optional continuous-spray watering.

How does the motion detection work to keep animals away?

An infrared passive detector senses heat and movement up to about 60 feet, triggering a startling five-second water spray to interrupt and discourage animals. The burst trains wildlife to avoid the protected area without harm. Range and sensitivity adjustments let you fine-tune detection to species and site conditions.

• Infrared PIR sensor detects heat and motion up to ~60 feet
• Instant five-second water pulse on activation
• Four sensitivity levels to target small or larger animals
• Distance dial controls spray reach up to 100 feet

Can I use this as a regular lawn sprinkler?

Yes — the Critter Ridder includes a continuous spray mode that converts the unit into a conventional sprinkler for watering. Switch modes to water lawns or gardens on a schedule from your hose connection, then return to motion-activated deterrent when needed. This dual-use design reduces the need for separate tools.

• Continuous spray option for standard watering tasks
• Adjustable spray distance for lawn or targeted bed coverage
• Conserves water with short bursts when in motion mode
• Useful for seasonal garden care and pest-free watering

What installation and power requirements should I expect?

Installation is straightforward: press the included metal spike into soil and mount the unit for stable, upright operation. Two AA batteries power the electronics; always check voltage before first use because batteries self-discharge during storage. Rechargeable cells will work but may hold less charge over time.

• Includes metal stake for simple, tool-free placement
• Operates on 2 AA batteries (not included)
• Check and replace batteries if activation fails
• Durable housing for outdoor exposure; position away from sprinkler overspray

Which animals does the Critter Ridder discourage?

The unit is effective against a broad range of common yard pests by using unexpected water bursts that interrupt nuisance behavior. It’s suitable for deterring animals that rely on scent and repeated presence, helping reduce visits without harmful chemicals or traps. Effectiveness can vary by animal and local conditions; combine with other humane measures for best results.

• Works on squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, deer, and birds
• Discourages neighborhood cats and stray dogs from beds
• Adjust sensitivity for smaller critters like chipmunks
• Best used as part of an integrated yard-protection plan

Who is this for? Homeowners, gardeners, and property managers who want a chemical-free, reusable way to protect landscaping from common wildlife will find the HAVAHART Critter Ridder a practical choice. It fits yards of many sizes thanks to adjustable range and sensitivity, and its dual sprinkler function adds seasonal value. Choose this unit if you prefer humane, water-conscious pest control that’s easy to install and customize.
